Basic Window Security
When homeowners think about home security, they automatically think about their doors. They know that they should have strong locks on their doors and that their doors should be made out of metal or have a solid wood core. They know that burglars often attempt to break into homes through the front or back doors by simply kicking them in, so they take precautions against that happening. However, homeowners often forget about their windows. Windows, by design, are not as strong as doors. They are meant to be clear, which automatically means they aren’t going to be as strong.
Burglars, especially those who aren’t very sophisticated, have been known to simply smash a window to gain entry into a house. They know that very few windows will be guarded against this technique. Basic home security system do not come with glass breakage alarms, so they are taking a relatively low risk by using this tactic. Because of this, it is important for you to pay attention to your windows as part of an overall home security system.
Ground level windows are the most vulnerable to break ins. Because of this, you need to ensure that you have locks on all of your windows and that you never leave these windows open. If your windows lift up to open, drill nails into both of the tracks at the top of the window so there is no space for burglars to crawl in. Sliding windows can be secured by placing a dowel rod or metal rod into the track so that the window cannot slide open.
Upper floor windows are less vulnerable, but if you have a way for the burglars to get up to the second floor, they are just as unsecured. So, do not leave ladders outside of your home and always trim back trees so that they cannot be climbed. These windows should also be equipped with locks and the locks should be engaged whenever you are out or in bed.
Consider adding a glass breakage alarm to your home security system. This would involve inserting a sensor inside the glass of all your windows, which can be expensive. However, you have to weigh the cost of installing this kind of alarm against what your property and your family are worth. Odds are, you will spend as much as it takes to keep them safe. Glass breakage alarms are an added layer of protection for you and your family.
