Aggressive Thieves: A More Difficult Type of Criminal

Publié le par John Cherry

A passive thief can be stopped by simply taking some basic common sense steps to protect your home and property. For example, if you lock your doors and windows, pick up your mail and newspapers every day, install a home security system and generally remove any opportunity to burglarize your house, you will successfully thwart a passive thief.

An Aggressive thief, however, cannot be stopped quite so easily. These thieves often put significantly more thought into their crimes and will usually expect to come into contact with their victims. For this reason, this type of criminal is often armed and will go to great lengths to get away with their crimes. This kind of thief is rarer than passive thieves, but if you do come across one’s path, you could be in grave danger.

As with a passive thief, you can keep most aggressive thieves at bay by installing a home security system in your home. Even though aggressive thieves plan their crimes better than passive thieves, they still would rather not come up against a security system if they can avoid it. The only time an aggressive thief will attempt to rob a house that has a security system installed is if they have chosen the home for a particular reason. For instance, you might have a valuable they can’t get anywhere else or they are looking to target a specific person in your family.

Thieves know that in a house with a security system, they have a very tiny window of opportunity to get inside the house, take what they came for and leave. The police are going to be on their way as soon as they cross the threshold of the home, since a monitored system will send notification to the monitoring center immediately. Aggressive thieves would rather have more time to commit their crimes than they will have in a protected house. For this reason, if they see signs of an alarm system present in a potential target, they will often decide it isn’t worth the risk to burglarize that particular house.

Another step you will want to take to protect yourself from aggressive thieves is to never advertise your valuables. The only reason why an aggressive thief would choose a house with a security system installed is if he thinks the reward is worth the substantially higher risk. If he doesn’t know for sure what is in the house, he probably won’t take that chance.
