More Tips for Crime Prevention

Preventing crime does not have to be an expensive job. Sure, you can spend a lot of money on a home security system, which will certainly help lower your odds of becoming the victim of a burglary. However, there are things you can do around your house that do not cost very much at all, if anything. While no one thing will equal what a home security system can do for you, when you add them all together, they can make your home very secure.

1. Don’t hang your spare house keys, car keys or other kinds of keys up where they can be seen through a window. A burglar only has to get to those keys and he will have access to everything you own. Instead, hang them on an interior wall away from windows, or lock them in a safe.

2. Never leave the keys to your windows or doors in the locks. This is certainly convenient, but remember: if it’s convenient for you, it’s also convenient for burglars. If it’s easy for you, it’s easy for them. Don’t make it easy for them.

3. Close your window treatments at night and when you are gone. You don’t want people coming up to the windows, looking inside and basically “shopping” for what they are going to steal later. In addition, keep your valuables out of sight of the windows whenever possible.

4. If you are going to be out of your house overnight or longer, put your lights and televisions on timers. This will help create the illusion that someone is home.

5. Install security lighting around your property. Light is the enemy of burglars. They do not want to be seen doing their crime, so they will pick houses that are dark over houses that are well-lit any day.

6. Consider chain link fences over solid wooden fences when putting up a barrier to your yard. Solid wooden fences actually create great hiding places for burglars. You do not want to be helping burglars break into your house, so use a see-through barrier if possible.

7. Never leave ladders or garden tools lying around the outside of your house. Burglars will use anything available to them to break into your home. Again, do not make it easy for them.

8. Every door that leads to the exterior of your house should have a peephole installed. This will allow you to see who is at the door without ever opening it.
