Cheap Ways to Make Your Home Secure

Home security experts agree that the majority of burglaries are cased out by criminals watching the house from the outside. Veteran burglars know exactly what signs to look for that makes a house an easy target. They pinpoint vulnerable spots in the home’s security that they can exploit in order for them to get in and out of a house quickly, quietly and without getting noticed. Even if you do not have the income right now to purchase a comprehensive home security system, you can still make your home more secure without spending a lot of money.

Believe it or not, the most common way for burglars to enter houses is through the front door. The reason they are able to get in this way is because people leave their doors unlocked. All the burglar has to do is turn the doorknob and he’s in. There is no opportunity for neighbors to see him trying to break in because you’ve basically invited him in yourself.

For this reason, it is critical that you always lock your doors, even if you are just leaving for a few minutes. Don’t even walk down the street to visit with a neighbor until your doors are locked. Your windows should also all be locked, even the windows on the second floor. To make it even more difficult for a burglar to get into your house, consider installing a brace bar on your entry doors. This will keep the door from being opened at all.

Speaking of doors, all of your entry doors should be either made of steel or have a solid wooden core. This will help prevent burglars from kicking in your doors. You should also install a heavy-duty dead bolt lock on each door to further protect against kick-ins. You can get a solid dead bolt from any hardware store for about $45, which is a small price to pay for better security.

If you can have a home security system installed, that is still the best security option available. You don’t have to purchase all the bells and whistles on your system, but you do want to spring for the monitoring services that come with most alarm systems these days. You want your system to be monitored 24 hours a day so that you can go about your life worry free, knowing that if your alarm does go off, someone will respond right away.
